WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University sophomores Paul Norton (Amherst, Mass.) and Grayce Selig (Narberth, Pa.) were the individual race winners today as the Brandeis cross country teams defeated Bentley College at Weston High School. The Brandeis men took a 19-42 decision, while the women were 20-41 victors.
In the first race, Norton led the Brandeis men, the No. 29 team in the nation in the most recent USTFCCCA Division III poll with a time of 18:03 over the 6K course. He was followed by fellow sophomore Zach Schwartz (Newtown, Conn.) with a time of 18:23 and senior Mike Stone (E. Falmouth, Mass.) in 18:23. Bentley junior Andy Watson (New Milford, Conn.) and sophomore Dan O'Connell (Medfield, Mass.) took fourth and fifth places, respectively, with times of 18:27 and 18:31, but the Judges had the next six finishers to earn the victory. Sophomore Kerwin Vega (Waltham, Mass.) led that pack with a time of 18:36.
On the women's side, Selig, competing in her first collegiate cross country meet won the four-kilometer race with a time of 15:27. She was followed closely by sophomore Marie Lemay (Saco, Maine). Bentley senior Melissa Nash (Marshfield, Mass.) had the top finish of the day for either Falcon team, coming in third with a time of 15:35. Brandeis's Alyssa Pisarik (Chelmsford, Mass.) posted the top finish by a rookie in either meet with her fourth-place finish and time of 15:45, 18 seconds ahead of the Falcons' Evelyn Marrero (Amsterdam, N.Y.), also a first-year runner. Another large Brandeis pack, eight runners strong and led by rookie Kate Warwick (Boxboro, Mass.) in 16:18 iced the meet for the Judges.
